As seen in the picture, this tree
stump seems as though it has different rings around it. These
"layers" are a result of cambium being produced in the plant.
This cambium is a certain type of tissue that comes in parallel rows of cells,
which is why it seems as though the trunk of the tree is thickening. Sometimes
cork will be overproduced in the stem of the plant and cracks and ridges will
appear, as seen in the photo, allowing for gas to be exchanged between the air
and the inside of the stem.
